Profile
Dr. Amr El-Shalofy is a dedicated equine reproduction veterinarian and clinical researcher, who grew up in Damietta in northern Egypt. After graduating with honors from Cairo University's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, he pursued his passion for horses by earning a doctorate in equine endometritis from the University of Zurich in Switzerland.
His clinical journey began with an internship at the Paul Schockemöhle Stud in Germany, where he specialized in equine reproduction. Over the past nine years, he has built an extensive career, practicing and teaching at leading universities and stud farms across Switzerland, Germany, Austria, and Belgium. His professional interests center on assisted reproductive technologies and infertility management in mares.
Outside of his veterinary work, Amr enjoys painting, biking, and spending quality time with his wife, Mona, and their son, Anas.
Research Interests
Dr. El-Shalofy’s research integrates reproductive physiology, biotechnology, and clinical theriogenology, with a focus on improving fertility management and reproductive efficiency in equines and livestock. His work bridges basic science with applied veterinary practice, emphasizing molecular biology, cryopreservation, and assisted reproductive technologies.
Key Research Areas
Equine Reproductive Health
- Investigating genetic markers associated with susceptibility to persistent breeding-induced endometritis in mares through transcriptomic analyses.
- Optimizing semen preservation techniques and exploring shipping protocols for cryopreserved horse semen.
Reproductive Biotechnology and Cryopreservation
- Advancing cryopreservation of oocytes in buffaloes and camels by exploring novel vitrification techniques and cryoprotectants.
- Enhancing in-vitro fertilization (IVF) outcomes and embryo development through improved oocyte preservation strategies.
Testicular and Uterine Hemodynamics
- Evaluating hormonal and pharmacological interventions (e.g., L-arginine, melatonin, oxytocin) to boost reproductive performance under environmental and seasonal stressors.
- Studying testicular blood flow, echotexture, and endocrine responses in small ruminants.
Fertility Management in Livestock
- Applying reproductive synchronization protocols (e.g., Ovsynch) to improve fertility in buffalo cows.
- Investigating the influence of nutritional and environmental factors on reproductive health and semen quality in bulls, rams, and goats.
