Dr. Uwafiokun Idemudia has been appointed dean of the College of Social and Applied Human Sciences.

Dr. Melanie Spence-Ariemma has been named the new vice-provost and chief academic officer at the University of Guelph-Humber and Dr. George Bragues has been appointed associate vice-provost (academic).

Dr. Melissa Perreault, Department of Biomedical Sciences, and Dr. Asim Biswas, School of Environmental Sciences, were named to the Royal Society of Canada College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists.

Dr. Harpreet Kochhar, PhD ’99, was appointed as president of the Public Health Agency of Canada.

Stephen Tanner, BA ’82, was recognized as the longestserving chief of police in Canada, with 20 years as chief of the Halton Regional Police Service and 40 years as a police officer.

Lorie Gold, B.Sc. ’79, DVM ’83, is the new president of the College of Veterinarians of Ontario.

Food science professor Dr. Alejandro Marangoni was named an Officer of the Order of Canada, one of Canada’s highest honours. University Professor Emeritus Dr. Barry Smit, Department of Geography, Environment and Geomatics, was appointed to the Order of Canada for his contribution to the understanding of climate change.

New Members of the Order of Canada announced in 2021 included Betsy McGregor, DVM ’87, named for her contributions to women and girls in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and her dedication to developing future leaders. Also named was Ken Knox, B.Sc. ’72, for his contributions to Ontario agriculture including promotion of extension and education programs for rural youth.

Tyler Schulz, B.Sc. ’99, was named as Ontario’s Commissioner of the Environment.

Dr. Natalie Carter, PhD ’15, Dip. ’98, is co-investigator of an ongoing research project intended to create new Arctic shipping routes that protect culturally significant marine areas that received a 2021 Governor General’s Innovation Award.

David Drahos, BA ’14, was named as Atlantic regional affairs adviser to federal Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Minister Bill Blair.

Sarah Douglas, B.Comm. ’17, will compete in the women’s Laser Radial sailing event during her first Olympic Games this summer.

Dr. Gervan Fearon, B.Sc. (Agr.) ’81, M.Sc. ’84, has been appointed as the new president of George Brown College in Toronto.

Patricia Tersigni, BA ’99, MA ’01, has been selected as campaign chair of the 2021 Guelph-Wellington-Dufferin United Way campaign. She helped lead the University’s recordbreaking UW campaigns in 2015 and 2016 as staff co-chair.

Baljit Singh, PhD ’94, has been named vice-president (research) at the University of Saskatchewan. He currently serves as dean of the faculty of veterinary medicine at the University of Calgary.


Jesse Popp

Jesse Popp has joined the Ontario Agricultural College as the Chair in Indigenous Environmental Stewardship. A member of Wiikwemikong Unceded Territory in Ontario, she holds a Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Environmental Science.


Gordon Bell

U of G graduate student Gordon Bell was named as a member of the inaugural Canadian Agricultural Youth Council.


Vicki Brisson

Kyle Julius

Kyle Julius, BA ’04, originally from Thunder Bay, Ont., has been named head coach of the Fraser Valley Bandits of the Canadian Elite Basketball League. He played for the Canadian men’s national team and for the Guelph Gryphons from 2001 to 2004.

Glenn Hoagland, MA ’86, is the new CEO and president of The Seeing Eye Inc., which provides seeing eye dogs.


Alexander Enyedi

Alexander Enyedi, M.Sc. ’83, was named president of State University of New York, Plattsburgh. Previously, he was provost and vice-president of Humboldt State University in California and spent 22 years at Western Michigan University.

Dionne Brand

English professor Dionne Brand won the 2019 $20,000 Trillium Book Award for Ontario’s best English-language title for her poetry collection The Blue Clerk.

Joanne O’Meara

Physics professor Joanne O’Meara has won a prestigious 3M National Teaching Fellowship, sponsored by 3M Canada and the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education. O’Meara is known for using active-learning techniques in her classes and exploring teaching ideas.


Cate Dewey

Cate Dewey has been appointed as U of G’s associate vice-president (academic). She chaired the Department of Population Medicine for 11 years and has been a U of G professor since 1995.


Emma Nishimura

Emma Nishimura, an instructor in the School of Fine Art and Music, received Norway’s prestigious Queen Sonja Print Award. She was chosen from a field of 42 artists worldwide.


Tamara Friesen

Tamara Friesen, MA ’97, was appointed a judge of the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta in Edmonton. Previously she served as legal counsel for the Law Society of Alberta and Nugent Law Office and as director of legal research and writing at the University of Alberta Faculty of Law. She studied Canadian literature at U of G.


Alex Charette

Alex Charette, a former B.Sc. student, was signed by the Toronto Argonauts. The wide receiver was a standout player for the Guelph Gryphons for four seasons. He also played for the Montreal Alouettes.


Ian Dohoo

Ian Dohoo, DVM ’76, PhD ’83, received the Order of Canada for his contributions to animal and human epidemiology. He is a professor emeritus at the University of Prince Edward Island.
