Recruit a Master of Bioinformatics Student
The University of Guelph's Master of Bioinformatics (M.Binf.) program is designed to train biological science graduates in the skills needed to work with complex data that is now routinely generated by researchers across life science disciplines.
The M.Binf. program is a one-year, course-based master’s program. Students take bioinformatics, statistics and programming courses in the fall and winter semesters and then undertake a research project in the summer (third) semester with U of G faculty members and/or partner organizations. Projects can be extended an additional semester with interest from the student and project supervisor.
Project Information
Projects can incorporate one or more of the following areas:
- Investigating a novel research hypothesis by applying bioinformatics tools
- Developing a software pipeline for data analysis and/or interpretation
- Using data analyses to direct decision-makin
- Developing and/or formally testing a new bioinformatics software tool or algorithm
Projects must involve hands-on research, analysis and/or software development to provide an intellectually stimulating experience for the student, and they must provide students with relevant employment skills.
Projects can be 4 or 8 months in duration, with students working 20-24 hours per week for the length of the project. Because the project is part of a course and not co-op, students will obtain course credit based on their final grade rather than a stipend or salary. Students must be available to attend biweekly, in-person classes in Guelph during the summer.
All students – including those completing a project with a partner organization – must have two University of Guelph Bioinformatics faculty advisors who oversee the project. One advisor will have informatics expertise (e.g., computational, statistical, mathematics), and the other advisor will have biological expertise. Research can be conducted on the University campus, in external research/business facilities or in a combination of both.
- 85% of grads work in bioinformatics
- within 1 year of graduating
- 100+ projects completed
- by M.Binf. students
- Over 25% of projects involve collaborations
- with external organizations
- 40% of students offered positions
- after their placement with external organizations
What is the timeline for hiring an M.Binf. student?
- September: Project proposals submitted to the M.Binf. program team for review and posting
- October: M.Binf. students submit applications for available projects
- November/December: Interviews and matching of students with projects
- May: Projects begin

Why hire an M.Binf. student?
Admission into the M.Binf. program is highly competitive. Through intensive coursework in their first two semesters of the program, M.Binf. students have experience managing, analyzing and interpreting data from multiple and diverse biological science disciplines.
Our students are dedicated, and they want to apply their knowledge from the program to make a meaningful contribution to research in academia, government and industry.
