New Health Unit Building Opens
On Wednesday, October 1, Public Health celebrated the grand opening of its new facility at 160 Chancellors Way in Guelph. The new building has been designed to meet the needs of the County of Wellington and the city of Guelph now and into the future.
Medical Officer of Health and CEO, Dr. Nicola Mercer invited Chair of the Board of Health, Amanda Rayburn Fines and dignitaries to join in the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Liz Sandals, MPP for Guelph; Chris White, Warden of Wellington County; and Karen Farbridge, Mayor of Guelph attended the grand opening and participated in the ceremony.
"Public Health has an essential role in the local healthcare system promoting health, preventing disease and injury, and responding to health emergencies in the community," said Dr. Nicola Mercer. "This new facility has modern clinics and adequate teaching spaces to handle the diverse work of public health for generations to come. The building is also accessible for persons with disabilities and families with young children and strollers."
Clinics in the new facility offer a variety of services including immunization, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections, speech and language assessment for preschoolers, and dental care for children from qualifying families. Public Health also has a wide range of programs and services that are available to everyone in the community including well water testing, breastfeeding and parenting classes, and food safety training and certification.
