Dr. Dave Wilson DVM, started his career working in small animal/mixed private practice and ended the last 18 years of his career with the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society as a Senior Director of Shelter Health & Wellness. A pioneer in shelter medicine, Dave was committed to life-long learning; he set out to create a humane and healthy environment for animals in shelters and beyond. Dave co-authored one of the first manuals of its kind on infectious disease prevention in shelter environments. He was a mentor, leader and true champion for the animals. He made it his mission to inspire others to make a difference in animal welfare. This award was created by the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society to honour the legacy Dr. Dave Wilson leaves behind, and to encourage the next generation of veterinary students to continue to be a champion for animal well-being, just like our friend, Dr. Dave Wilson. Apply in the fall during the call for applications from the Dean's office with a letter of recommendation (max 1 page) from a faculty member, a DVM student, or a supervisor at a non-profit or community organization with a shelter medicine and/or animal welfare focus. Letters should outline the student’s role with non-profit organizations, OVC student clubs, or other initiatives related to shelter medicine or animal welfare and should include leadership roles held and how the student’s involvement helped contribute to shelter medicine and/or improving animal welfare. Selection will be based on the greatest contributions made to shelter medicine and/or improving animal welfare through volunteer and/or work with non-profit organizations, OVC student clubs, or other initiatives related to shelter medicine and/or animal welfare. In the event of two or more equally qualified candidates, the student with the highest DVM program average will be selected.
Students registered in phase 4 of the DVM program who have participated in volunteer and/or work activities related to shelter medicine and/or animal welfare. Preference will be given to students who are residents of Ontario: a) have lived in Ontario for a period of at least 12 consecutive months before the beginning of entry to the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Program study; or b) the student's spouse has lived in Ontario for at least 12 consecutive months up to the beginning of the current year full-time post-secondary study period; or c) the student's parent(s)/stepparent(s)/legal guardian/official sponsor has lived in Ontario for at least 12 consecutive months up to the beginning of the current year full-time post-secondary study period.
