Description

This prize recognizes outstanding contributions to basic research which uses lasers to advance our knowledge of the fundamental physical properties of materials and their interaction with light. Some examples of relevant areas of research are: nonlinear optics, ultrafast phenomena, laser spectroscopy, squeezed states, quantum optics, multiphoton physics, laser cooling and trapping, physics of lasers, particle acceleration by lasers, and short wavelength lasers. The prize will be awarded annually.

Eligibility

  • Self-nominations are not accepted
  • The nominator does not have to be an APS member
  • A nominee does not have to be an APS member
  • Nominations are open to candidates who have made outstanding contributions to basic research using lasers. Nominations are active for three years.
  • Most nominees are individuals, but in some cases teams may be nominated, especially collaborations involving more than one institution. When considering nominating a team, only nominate the primary members who have made original and indispensable contributions.
  • An APS prize or award recipient may be nominated for other APS prizes or awards for new work or achievements, or significant extension of the previously awarded work or achievements. Please do not nominate a person or team for the same work or achievements for which they have already received an APS Society level prize or award (dissertation or unit awards are acceptable).
  • APS does not award honours posthumously.

Prize

The prize consists of $10,000 plus an allowance for travel to the meeting at which the prize is awarded and a certificate citing the contributions made by the recipient.

Special Notes

Please note that research activities carried out in the context of COVID-19 need to adhere to the University of Guelph COVID-19 research principles, policies, guidelines and processes as they may be updated from time to time and communicated on the Office of Research Web-Page

Deadlines

If College-level review is required, your College will communicate its earlier internal deadlines.
