Description
Impact Grants will accelerate and focus the knowledge gained from scientific findings, in the short or long term, into outcomes that will significantly advance understanding of cancer and improve scientific knowledge, which will result in optimized patient care, improved cancer treatment or reduced cancer burden. Impact Grants are to provide funding to support ideas that promote major advancements in research programs, whether at the fundamental discovery stage (such as studies involving model organisms that demonstrate potential for impact) through to applied research (such as patient or population based proposals). In addition to biomedical research, applications from prevention, health services, social and population health researchers are encouraged. Note that these grants are not intended to support incremental scientific advances and should not be considered a “regular” research grant and are not intended to solely support research infrastructure.
These grants have been created to support large, well-developed programs in cancer research that have the potential to make a significant impact on the burden of disease in patients and populations. The goal of the CCS Research Impact Grant program is to provide a mechanism for scientists to adopt innovations and accelerate the application of new knowledge to address problems in cancer research that have the potential for practical application.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to form multidisciplinary teams including early career investigators, to provide mentorship and development opportunities for Canada’s future cancer researchers.
Eligibility
An applicant must hold a firm academic position (as a primary appointment) which allows the individual to engage in independent research activities for the duration of the project and includes the ability to supervise trainees and publish research results.
A researcher designated as the Principal Investigator must be based in, or formally affiliated with, an eligible Canadian Host Institution such as a university, research institute or health care agency. Graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, research associates, Adjunct Professors or Status only appointments (except where they hold a firm academic position at another Canadian institution), technical support staff, or investigators based outside of Canada are not eligible to be a Principal Investigator
Funding Availability
Budgets awarded will not exceed $250,000 per year, to a maximum of $1,250,000 per grant. It is anticipated that approximately seven grants will be awarded in this competition, with approximately three of these being breast cancer grants.

Information For Co-applicants
If you need to meet a deadline set by the lead institution for this opportunity, please ensure that you provide the Office of Research with at least five days in advance of the lead institution’s deadline to review the application, or your proposed component of the project. Please be in touch with the Office of Research (contact information below) ahead of the deadline if it looks like it will be difficult for you to submit all the required documentation on time (i.e. budget, proposal, OR-5 Form).
