Description

Canadian Blood Services partners with the CIHR Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health to provide outstanding early career investigators the opportunity to develop and demonstrate their independence in initiating and conducting research in the area of Transfusion Science relevant to any of the CIHR research themes (biomedical, clinical, health services, or population health research) and relevant to Canadian Blood Services' mission.

Research Areas

Funding is available to support projects that are determined to be relevant to the following specific research areas:

1. The CIHR Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (ICRH) and the Institute of Indigenous Peoples’ Health (IIPH) will provide funding to support *Indigenous Health Research in any of ICRH’s mandate areas.
2. ICRH in partnership with Canadian Blood Services (CBS) will provide funding to support transfusion science research relevant to both ICRH mandates and CBS Mission (See eligibility requirements and conditions of funding) across any of the CIHR research themes (biomedical, clinical, health services, or population health research).
3. ICRH in partnership with Cystic Fibrosis Canada (CF Canada) will provide funding for cystic fibrosis research, across any of the CIHR research themes (biomedical, clinical, health services or population health research).
4. The CIHR Institute of Infection and Immunity (III) will provide funding to support research integrating infection and immunity knowledge in the control and prevention of circulatory and respiratory diseases.
5. ICRH will provide funding to support research relevant to any of ICRH’s mandates.

*Indigenous Health Research is defined as any field or discipline related to health and/or wellness that is conducted by, grounded in or engaged with, First Nations, Inuit or Métis communities, societies or individuals and their wisdom, cultures, experiences or knowledge systems, as expressed in their dynamic forms, past and present.

The award provides a contribution towards a salary and research allowance. In addition, Canadian Blood Services/CIHR Early Career Investigators (ECI) in Transfusion Science are appointed as Canadian Blood Services adjunct scientists for the duration of their ECI award.

Eligibility

1. The Nominated Principal Applicant (NPA) must be an independent researcher
2. The NPA must be appointed at an eligible institution (See Institutional Eligibility Requirements for eligibility process and associated timelines)
3. The NPA must also:
   1. be an early career investigator, within 60 months for their first academic appointment by the application deadline.
   2. have a written commitment from their Institution, via a letter from the Dean of their primary Faculty or Research Director of their primary Research Institute which accompanies the application, that includes:
      • A commitment that the NPA will hold a full-time faculty or equivalent position.
      • A commitment to protect a minimum of 75% of the NPA’s time to research activities relevant to the Objectives and Research Areas described in the description section, limiting clinical service, teaching and/or administrative activities to a maximum of 25% of the NPA’s time for the duration of the award.
4. If applying as a Clinician Scientist, at the time of application, the NPA must hold a recognized training certification to practice as a health professional, as well as a full-time faculty or equivalent position as a clinician-scientist (see how to apply section).
5. Transfusion Science Research Pool only: Clinical investigators (MD) or investigators with an MD-PhD are not eligible for this funding pool.
6. The Nominated Principal Applicant must have successfully completed one of the sex- and gender-based analysis training modules available online through the CIHR Institute of Gender and Health and submit a Certificate of Completion (see how to apply section). Applicants are encouraged to review the “How to integrate sex and gender in research” section on the CIHR website.
7. In order to increase capacity and allow as many researchers as possible to benefit from this program, NPAs are ineligible to apply if they hold or have already held peer reviewed grants as NPA with a total sum value of $300,000 or more. This includes, but is not limited to peer-reviewed funding from CIHR, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), or Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). In addition, those currently holding another similar salary award, such as a Canada Research Chair Award, New Investigator Award or ECI award from any source are also ineligible.
8. For the Indigenous Health Research Pool, applicants must submit an “other” attachment describing their experience working in an Indigenous Health Research environment. See how to apply for more details.

Funding Availability

The total amount available for this funding opportunity is $2,415,000, enough to fund approximately seven (7) awards.

Maximum Project Value

The maximum amount per award is $115,000 per year for a total of $345,000 per award. Of this $115,000, applicants may request: Salary contribution: up to a maximum of 40% or $46,000 per annum, including fringe benefits; Research Allowance: a minimum of 60% or $69,000 per annum.
