Description

There are growing concerns with the rapid rise in vaping in Canada and the associated health effects. As vaping products continue to increase in popularity, particularly among youth, there is a growing need for research evidence to advance our understanding of vaping behaviours, associated health effects (including vaping-associated lung illness [VALI] and other lung injury), vascular changes, and mental health and addiction impacts.The lack of evidence on the health effects of vaping of cannabis products (including extracts), particularly in light of the recent legalization of cannabis extracts in Canada, is another key area where further research is needed.

This funding opportunity will support projects relevant to the following research areas:

• Youth vaping of nicotine, cannabinoid extracts, THC, and other compounds
• Short and/or long-term health effects of vaping (including lung injury in youth and/or adults)
• Behaviours and associated health and social impacts of vaping product use (youth and/or adults)
• Mental health, addiction and dependence in the context of vaping (youth and/or adults)
• Vaping policy issues related to youth and/or adults
• Vaping and oral health (youth and/or adults)
• Other areas related to the health consequences of vaping in youth and/or adults

Studies using preclinical models, mechanistic, human and/or population-based approaches are eligible.

Differences exist in the use of vaping products, making sex and/or gender issues an important component of this research initiative.

Research projects exploring the use of vaping as a smoking cessation tool or as a harm reduction strategy are not eligible for this funding opportunity. 

Eligibility

1. The Nominated Principal Applicant must be independent researcher at the time of application.  
2. The Nominated Principal Applicant must be appointed at an eligible institution (see the CIHR Application Administration Guide – Part 4)
3. The Nominated Principal Applicant must have successfully completed one of the sex- and gender-based analysis training modules available online through the CIHR Institute of Gender and Health and have submitted a Certificate of Completion (see How to Apply. Select and complete the training module most applicable to your research project.
4. At least one project participant, other than the Nominated Principal Applicant, must be a knowledge user (either as Principal Knowledge User or  Knowledge User).  Knowledge users could include health practitioners/specialists, teachers, youth, etc.
5. For any research applications involving First Nations, Inuit, Métis and/or Urban Indigenous populations, applicants must describe their experience working in an Indigenous Health Research environment. See How to Apply section for more details.

Funding Availability

$2,700,000, enough to fund approximately 27 grants.
