Description
In response to the Canadian government's renewed commitment to gender-based analysis, Health Canada recently approved a department-wide Sex- and Gender-Based Analysis (SGBA) Action Plan. A key activity within this action plan is a partnership between the CIHR Institute of Gender and Health, the Institute of Aboriginal Peoples' Health and the Health Canada Gender and Health Unit (GHU). The aim of this partnership is to fund research-policy partnerships, which will help bridge the gaps between research knowledge and policy development and support the rigorous application of SGBA to ensure Health Canada's outward facing activities address the diverse needs of women, men, girls, boys and gender-diverse people to maximize positive health outcomes and improve health equity.
Research Areas
This funding opportunity will support initiatives relevant to the following research areas (see details in the additional information section):
- Applying a gendered lens to cannabis risk perceptions, public education and awareness
- Considering SGBA across the pharmaceutical management system: a focus on select drug classes
- Digital technology to support informal caregivers: matching the tools to the needs
- Involving Indigenous fathers/men in healthy child development programming and activities
- Applying a GBA+ lens to a reorientation of Health Canada risk communications for health products
- Considering sex and gender to support a psychologically healthy workplace
- Applying SGBA+ in developing a modernized framework for the regulation of self-care products
Eligibility
This funding opportunity is for single individuals applying as Nominated Principal applicants. The Nominated Principal applicant may apply to a maximum of two research areas separately; however, the applicant will need to justify their ability to dedicate adequate time and resources for both research areas should they be successful.
For an application to be eligible:
- Only a Nominated Principal Applicant may apply on each application (i.e. only one applicant per submission) and must be an independent researcher appointed at an eligible institution (See Institutional Eligibility Requirements for eligibility process and associated timelines).
- The Nominated Principal Applicant must illustrate expertise related to:
- Sex- and Gender-Based Analysis (e.g. sex differences and/or gender, feminist theories, masculinities, as relate to the social determinants of health)
- Outcome evaluation (e.g. performance indicators, program assessment, impact evaluation, quantitative and/or qualitative methodological expertise).
- Applicants interested in the “Involving Indigenous fathers/men in healthy child development programming and activities” area must have experience working respectfully with First Nations, Inuit or Métis. For example, working with principles of First Nations self-determination related to research and data.

Maximum Project Value
- The maximum amount per grant is $75,000 per year for up to two years for a total of $150,000, per grant.
- Of the $1,050,000, one grant is available for each research area mentioned below:
- Applying a gendered lens to cannabis risk perceptions, public education and awareness
- Considering SGBA across the pharmaceutical management system: a focus on select drug classes
- Digital technology to support informal caregivers: matching the tools to the needs
