Japan Prize Foundation
Description
The Japan Prize Foundation (hereafter referred to as the Foundation) awards the Japan Prize to people from throughout the world who have produced creative breakthroughs in science and technology, thereby substantially contributing to the progress of science and technology and significantly advancing the cause of world peace and prosperity. Each year the Foundation designates two specific fields in which the prize will be awarded.
For 2023 the fields are:
- In the research areas of Physics, Chemistry, Informatics, and Engineering, the eligible field for the Japan Prize is "electronics, information, and communication"
- In the research areas of Life Sciences, Agriculture, and Medicine, the eligible field for the Japan Prize is "life science"
Eligibility
There are no restrictions as to nationality, profession, age or gender. Self-nomination is not accepted.
The Japan Prize is intended, in principle, to recognize advanced breakthroughs in science and technology. However, work done in the past may be selected for the award if its significance has recently been appreciated.
The Prize is in principle awarded to individuals. However, in exceptional cases, it may be awarded to a group consisting of not more than three people. When a group has been proposed, they will be treated as one candidate.
Prize
Each laureate receives a certificate of merit, a commemorative medal, and a cash prize of 50 million Japanese yen (approximately USD $460,000).
Special Notes
Please note that research activities carried out in the context of COVID-19 need to adhere to the University of Guelph COVID-19 research principles, policies, guidelines and processes as they may be updated from time to time and communicated on the Office of Research web-page.

How to Apply
The Vice-President (Research) encourages nominations for this prestigious award, and will serve as nominator for those nominees recommended by the Honours and Awards Advisory Committee. If you wish to nominate a colleague or to be considered for VPR nomination:
- We recommend discussing your interest in this award with your College Research Manager and Associate Dean (Research).
- Complete the Expression of Interest document.
- Send the completed Expression of Interest document and a CV to research.honours@uoguelph.ca and copy your College Research Manager by the internal deadline.
As this is an international prize, the University may engage the Global Excellence Initiative to coordinate external review of nominations.
Career interruptions due to parental leave, family care, extended illness, or community responsibilities will not negatively impact the committee’s assessment of a candidate’s research productivity. These will be taken into consideration when EOIs are assessed.
If your nomination will be submitted by a different nominee, and therefore does not require the Vice-President's endorsement, please submit a complete nomination and signed OR-5 to research.services@uoguelph.ca by the external deadline.
