Mitacs and Mental Health Research Canada (MHRC).

Program

Summer 2025 Indigenous Studentship

Description

Mitacs is dedicated to advancing collaborations between industry, academia, and government, and to nurturing international research networks between Canadian academic institutions and the world. One of these partnerships is with Mental Health Research Canada (MHRC).

The purpose of the partnership between MHRC and Mitacs is to support the development of the next generation of mental health researchers. The studentships funded under this initiative will provide opportunities for students to have a direct impact on their communities.

MHRC and Mitacs are partnering through the Mitacs Indigenous Pathways Initiative, to support the brightest Indigenous university or college students conducting research in mental health at one of Canada’s many post-secondary institutions. These interns will share their time between academic institutions and partner organizations, tying together their research with the end-users to ensure the project is tailored to and appropriate for that community’s needs and people with lived experience. This application cycle is for the Summer 2025 term (for projects beginning by May 2025).

Eligibility

Eligible studentship candidates must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident self-identifying as First Nations, Inuit or Métis;
  • Be enrolled in an Undergraduate, Masters, College or PhD program at an accredited Canadian University or College, with a background in psychology or related field/discipline;
  • Be seeking to conduct a mental health research project in collaboration with both an academic supervisor and an eligible partner organization (with preference given to projects addressing the unique needs of diverse and/or vulnerable populations in Canada); and,
  • Not be a current or past employee of the partner organization named in the application or have any real or perceived conflict of interest with them.

Eligible partner organizations:

Applicants must identify an eligible partner organization (can be multiple if necessary). To be eligible for this opportunity the partner organization must take an active role in the project by supervising and mentoring the student and the organization must benefit from the proposed outcomes. These organizations can be:

  • An Indigenous community;
  • Community organizations;
  • Research centers;
  • Hospitals and other healthcare providers; and
  • Mental Health/Health organizations; amongst others.

The focus on Indigenous mental health implies a need for community involvement to align with the Mitacs Indigenous Research Policy.

Candidates are eligible for funding of $15,000 CAD, for one 4-6 month term, with potential for renewal. For this round of funding, projects would begin by May 2025. Funds are paid directly to the institution following Mitacs Accelerate program guidelines.
