For More Information

Description
The Ontario-wide Cancer TArgeted Nucleic Acid Evaluation (OCTANE) is an Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR) supported initiative that offers targeted next-generation sequencing of tumour DNA, while concurrently establishing a large and ever-expanding centralized biorepository of tumour and blood samples for future research studies.
At this time, the Steering Committee is seeking project proposals that will leverage the use of banked OCTANE tumour tissue and blood samples in hypothesis-driven research studies of diagnostic utility, clinical impact, or unmet need in cancer care. There are currently 1337 OCTANE cases with tissue (DNA, RNA, and/or unstained slides) and 2055 cases with blood (buffy coat, buffy coat DNA, plasma, plasma DNA) available for proposed research projects. 1309 cases have both tissue and blood available.
Funding Availability
No funding is available. Project Investigators must have sufficient funds to cover the cost of their project, including but not limited to:
- central sample preparation and distribution;
- comprehensive clinical data curation (if applicable); and
- all laboratory analyses.
Special Notes
Project Investigators must indicate the exact amount of material required to complete their project. Given the value of the biospecimens, only the minimum amount of material required for each project will be distributed to successful applicants.
The following 11 "essential"clinical data elements are available for most banked biospecimens:
- Sex
- Age (year and month of birth)
- Ethnicity
- Cancer type
- Date of first diagnosis
- Type of sample (primary vs. metastasis)
- Date of collection of the profiled sample
- Date of sequencing results of the profiled sample
- Standard molecular pathology information
- Smoking history
- Survival status
Deadlines
If College-level review is required, your College will communicate its earlier internal deadlines.

How to Apply
This RFP will have 5 steps:
- A completed Project Proposal is sent to OCTANE.
- Proposals will be reviewed by the OCTANE Steering Committee.
- Feedback will be provided regarding feasibility, the proposed science and clinical application.
- Applicants will be notified of the status of their project proposal in June 2019.
- If samples are to be sent to the University of Guelph, please contact the Research Innovation Office to arrange for a Material Transfer Agreement (MTA) to be executed prior to sample shipment.
