Description

Swine Innovation Porc (SIP), with support from the Pork Promotion and Research Agency (PPRA), is launching a new research funding call to drive innovation in the Canadian pork sector. These key priorities were shaped through collaboration with Provincial Pork Organizations and industry stakeholders, ensuring the call for proposals reflects what matters most to the sector. With support from the Pork Promotion and Research Agency (PPRA), we’re excited to advance research that brings new knowledge and practical, real-world solutions to strengthen the pork industry’s long-term success. This call seeks high-impact research projects that will improve the industry’s resilience, sustainability, and competitiveness.

We are seeking proposals that align with the following key themes:

• Animal Health – Develop new technologies and strategies to prevent and manage endemic diseases (e.g., PRRS, Strep suis, etc.).

• Buildings & Equipment – Advance alternative housing designs that improve pig welfare, efficiency, and sustainability.

• Food Safety & Quality – Improve pathogen control and extend the shelf life of pork products.

• Improving Energy and Water Efficiency – Increase energy & water efficiency and reduce environmental impact of pork production.

Maximum Project Value

Projects can seek funding through two streams:

• Discovery & Applied Research: Foundational and industry-driven research projects (up to $150,000 over three years).

• Short-Term "Quick Win" Projects: Pilot studies, proof-of-concept work, and economic impact assessments (typically under $50,000, completed within a year).

Matching funds:

Applicants are encouraged to secure co-funding (cash). Greater co-funding is strongly encouraged and will be viewed favourably. 

• SIP’s support will normally not exceed 50% of Total Project Costs.

• Applicants are strongly encouraged to source a minimum of 50% co-funding (cash) for their proposals, and greater co-funding will be viewed favourably. 

• In-kind is not eligible co-funding.

Project Start Dates: 

Approved projects can commence no earlier than the date the applicant receives officially written notification of the award. Flexibility will be provided to align with project workplans and other co-funding timelines. Notice of award is anticipated to be shared by July 31, 2025.
