Description
This funding opportunity is a collaboration between two CIHR institutes with a goal to build research capacity, generate new knowledge, and support knowledge exchange and translation in maternal, reproductive, child and youth health by funding operating grants to early career investigators.
The specific objectives of this funding opportunity are:
- To support early career investigators in initiating and conducting independent research in the area of maternal, reproductive, child and youth health with the goal of building research capacity in this important health research area.
- To generate new knowledge that will contribute to improving maternal, reproductive, child and youth health outcomes, as well as increasing our understanding of the challenges, needs and current gaps in this research area.
- To facilitate knowledge exchange and translation between early career researchers and other stakeholders in maternal, reproductive, child and youth health.
Research Areas
All applications in the area of maternal, reproductive, child and youth health research as per IHDCYH’s mandate [2] will be eligible for support.
In addition, funding is available to support projects that are determined to be relevant to the following specific research areas:
- Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction (INMHA): Maternal, reproductive, child and/or youth health research relevant to the Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction’s mandate [3] to support research to enhance mental health, neurological health, vision, hearing, and cognitive function and to reduce the burden of related disorders through prevention strategies, screening, diagnosis, treatment, support systems, and palliation.
In keeping with the CIHR Sex, Gender and Health Research [4] policy, all proposals are expected to consider how sex and/or gender might shape the research described. Applicants are encouraged to visit the CIHR sex- and gender-based analysis resource page [5] for more information on key considerations for the appropriate integration of sex and gender in their proposal.
Eligibility
- The Nominated Principal Applicant (NPA) must be an independent researcher [6] appointed at an eligible institution (see the CIHR Application Administration Guide – Part 4 [7]). Individuals who do not hold an independent research appointment at the time of application, but who expect to be appointed by the beginning of the funding period, may apply. If the application is successful, funds will be released to the Institution Paid once the applicant’s status is confirmed.
- At the time of application, the NPA must meet all of the following eligibility criteria:
- Have held an independent research appointment for a period of less than 60 months.
- Been awarded operating grant funding of less than $500,000 Canadian dollars in total as an NPA (or equivalent in non-CIHR competitions, i.e. the project lead who receives the funds) through a competitive process. (Grants where the applicant’s role is not that of NPA, or equivalent for non-CIHR competitions, are not counted towards this total.)
- Have at least 50% protected time for research.
- The NPA must have successfully completed one of the sex- and gender-based analysis training modules [8] available online through the CIHR Institute of Gender and Health. A Certificate of Completion must be included in the full application (see How to Apply [9]). Please select and complete the training module most applicable to your research project. Applicants are encouraged to review “How to integrate sex and gender in research [10]” on the CIHR website.
- Applicants may only submit one application to this competition as the Nominated Principal Applicant.

Partnership Linkage Tool
CIHR is providing a linkage tool [11] that is intended to facilitate development of new collaborations between applicant funding partners and early career investigators should there be interest. This is not a mandatory tool. Information is provided on a volunteer basis and does not confer any advantages in the evaluation and funding of applications. The table will be updated weekly until the application deadline. If you would like to use this tool, please complete a short form survey [12]. The information you provide will appear on a public CIHR web page. Please note that potential applicants are not required to use the linkage tool or contact those who have submitted their information.
