Description
This initiative will support teams of researchers, patients* and knowledge users to investigate prospectively the indirect socio and economic cost of inherited diseases in Canada. These costs include but are not limited to: loss of income/education, early retirement, isolation/missing community and cultural events, cost of medication and devices, out-of-pocket healthcare expenses, at-home care, etc. Teams must include representation from at least three provinces or territories to allow for cross-jurisdictional comparisons.
*In the context of this funding opportunity, patient is "an overarching term inclusive of individuals with personal experience of a health issue and informal caregivers, including parents and family, friends, and members of support organizations (e.g. patients' associations)."

Eligibility
For an application to be eligible:
- The Nominated Principal Applicant must be an independent researcher [3].
- The Nominated Principal Applicant must be appointed at an eligible institution (see the CIHR Application Administration Guide - Part 4 [4]).
- At least one project participant, other than the Nominated Principal Applicant, must be a knowledge user [5] (including but not limited to decision makers [6], policy makers, clinician scientists, health professionals).
- In addition to the Nominated Principal Applicant and knowledge user, at least one Co-Applicant must be a patient* or patients' association representative.
- All research projects must be cross-jurisdictional in scope with team member representation from at least 3 provinces and/or territories to ensure appropriate analysis of the pan-Canadian situation.
- An applicant can only submit one application as a Nominated Principal Applicant within this competition.

COVID-19 Impact on ECRs:
CIHR is temporarily adjusting the period of eligibility for an ECR. All those who held ECR status as of March 1, 2020, or who secured their first academic appointment after this date, will have their status extended by one year.
CIHR will closely monitor the pandemic and its impact on ECRs overall and on specific groups with the intent that further interventions may be warranted.
Funding Availability
The total amount available for this funding opportunity is $1,350,000, enough to fund approximately three grants.
Maximum Project Value
The maximum amount per grant is $150,000 per year for a total of $450,000 per grant.
