Description
As administered by Natural Resources Canada, the Clean Growth Program [1] (CGP) supports the development and commercialization of clean technologies in the country’s energy, mining, and forestry sectors. Through the program, it’s expected participants will bring forward new technologies which minimize the environmental impacts of Canada’s natural resources industries.
This program covers five areas focused on pressing environmental challenges and economic opportunities facing Canada’s natural resource operations:
- Reducing greenhouse gas and air-polluting emissions
- Minimizing landscape disturbances and improving waste management
- The production and use of advanced materials and bioproducts
- Efficient energy use and productivity
- Reducing water use and impacts on aquatic ecosystems
Eligibility
Legal entities incorporated/registered in Canada including businesses and non-profits, research centres, Canadian post-secondary institutions, Indigenous organizations, community groups, and provincial, territorial, regional, or municipal governments. Must focus on advancing a clean technology with a current technology readiness level (TRL) [2]of 3-9. Applicants must also secure financial and/or in-kind support from provinces and/or territories.Funding Availability
The total funding available under the CGP is $155.0M, and will be used to support clean technology research and development (R&D), and demonstration including up to first commercial installations. It is anticipated that the total funding will be allocated equally to the energy, mining and forestry sectors.
CGP consists of two separate funding streams:
- R&D projects, from applied R&D to pilot projects
- Demonstration projects, including up to first commercial installations
The split will be determined by focus areas, sector needs and projects selected.
Research and development (R&D) projects may receive grant funding up to 75% of eligible project expenses to a maximum $5 million (minimum ask $300k). Demonstration projects and front end engineering design (FEED) studies may receive conditionally repayable funding up to 50% of eligible project expenses to a maximum $10 million (minimum ask $500k).
Indirect Costs
Overhead expenses will not exceed 15% of eligible expenditures.

How to Apply
Two-phase application process including a Letter of Interest (LOI) due February 28, 2018 and a Full Project Proposal (FPP) for those who have an approved LOI. Projects to take place from April 1, 2018 to March 31, 2021.
