Description
Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) officially launched the new Research Partnerships Program, called NSERC Alliance Grants, on April 24, 2019.
Alliance Grants encourage greater collaboration in Canada’s R&D system by providing support for projects that include both generators and users of research results and knowledge. Alliance is designed to be more responsive and flexible for our research community and to accommodate a broader range of partners. It also includes incentives for collaborations with small and medium-sized enterprises and multi-sectoral partnerships, and offers an accelerated means for projects to scale and grow.
A few key benefits:
- Single point of entry to rapidly develop new partnerships, or facilitate the growth of existing research collaborations;
- Support for projects of different levels of scale and complexity, from new, short term, one-on-one collaborations, to larger multi-stakeholder research teams;
- Enhanced flexibility in the types of projects and partners, providing more opportunities for more innovative collaborations;
- Supports research focused on outcomes as well as the training of research talent in a multipartner environment;
- Streamlined application process resulting in faster decision times, thereby supporting modern and fast-breaking research.
For full details about the Alliance Grants and how to apply please visit the new Alliance webpage [1].
How to Apply
Alliance will be launched in a phased approach.
On May 21st , Option 1 [2] will be open for applications requesting $150,000 or more annually from NSERC. Option 1 for applications requesting less than $150,000 annually from NSERC, as well as Option 2, will be phased in gradually.
Please continue to check the website for the latest information and sign up to the mailing list on the Alliance webpage.
On December 2, 2019, Alliance grants will be open for Option 1 [2] applications requesting over $30,000 annually from NSERC. Applications requesting between $20,000 and $30,000 annually from NSERC will be accepted beginning on December 11, 2019.
Option 2 [3] applications requesting support for up to 90% or 100% of the costs of the project will be accepted in early 2020. This component of the Alliance grants is intended for proposals that:
- aim at conducting natural science or engineering research that addresses an unmet societal need. This may include research affecting public goods, or that will address national or global issues that benefit more than a single or a few organizations, and where sources of funds are unavailable;
- connect partner organizations willing and able to overcome existing barriers to address these challenges and achieve results that can lead to a societal impact beyond economic benefits, and where an increased level of support from public funds is justified.
More details on the objectives and on the application and evaluation processes for Option 2 [3] will follow soon.
