Program
Partnership Grants - Stage 1 [1]
Description
Partnership Grants are expected to respond to the objectives of the Research Partnerships program [2]. Proposals exclusively for partnered research training initiatives [3] are expected to respond, instead, to the objectives of the Research Training and Talent Development [4] program.
These grants provide support for new and existing formal partnerships [5] over four to seven years to advance research, research training and/or knowledge mobilization in the social sciences and humanities. This is done through mutual co-operation and sharing of intellectual leadership, as well as through resources as shown by cash and/or in-kind contributions [6].
Partnership Grants are intended for large teams of postsecondary institutions and/or organizations of various types that work in formal collaboration.
The quality of training, mentoring and employability plans for students and emerging scholars [7] will be evaluated as an important part of the proposed initiative. SSHRC’s Guidelines for Effective Research Training [8] explain how students and emerging scholars can meaningfully participate in proposed initiatives.
The intellectual leadership and governance for a formal partnership can come from the research community and/or from partner organizations from the public, private and not-for-profit sectors.

Maximum Project Value
Partnership Grants undergo a two-stage adjudication process. Only applicants successful at the first stage will be invited to submit an application at the second stage.
Stage 1: Applicants successful at the first stage will be offered a grant worth up to $20,000 to help in the preparation of the second stage application—i.e., to further refine the question(s) to be addressed; to establish partnership arrangements, governance structure and/or approach/methodology; and to consolidate their collaborative activities.
Stage 2 (by invitation only): Partnership Grants are valued at a maximum of $500,000 per year over four to seven years, up to a total of $2.5 million.
Indirect Costs
There are no indirect costs on the funding provided directly by SSHRC.
For SSHRC PG - Stage 1, funding is not contingent upon cash and/or in-kind contributions from external sponsor(s)/partner(s). For this reason, any cash contributions from external sponsor(s)/partner(s) will be subject to a rate of 40% indirect costs, or the maximum allowable rate as published by the external sponsor/partner. In-kind contributions are not subject to indirect costs.
Those applicants that are successful in Stage 1 will be invited to apply in Stage 2. In Stage 2, an applicant must show that they will secure, over and above the budget requested from SSHRC, a 35% minimum cash and/or in-kind contributions from other sources during the life of the grant (four to seven years). Since the funding is contingent upon cash and/or in-kind contributions, any cash contributions from external sponsor(s)/partner(s) up to the required matching amount (35%) will be subject to a reduced indirect cost rate of 25%. Any cash contribution above and beyond the required matching amount (exceeding 35%) will be subject to the full 40% indirect cost rate, or the maximum allowable rate as published by that external sponsor/partner. In-kind contributions are not subject to indirect costs.
This information is outlined in the Full Cost of Research Policy [10].
Project Duration
Four to seven years.

Information For Co-applicants
If you need to meet a deadline set by the lead institution for this opportunity, please ensure that you provide the Research Services Office with at least five days notice in advance of the lead institution’s deadline to review the application or your proposed component of the project. Please contact the Research Services Office (research.services@uoguelph.ca [12]) ahead of the deadline if it looks like it will be difficult for you to submit all the required documentation on time (i.e. budget, proposal, OR-5 Form).
