Tri-Agency Guidance on the Use of Artificial Intelligence in the Development and Review of Research Proposals
In November 2023, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), and the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) ('the agencies') established a panel of external experts to provide advice on the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in the development and review of research proposals submitted for grant applications.
The newly released Guidance on the Use of Artificial Intelligence in the Development and Review of Research Proposals, developed by the agencies, is intended for researchers in Canada and Canadian post-secondary institutions, and draws heavily on the advice from the panel and on feedback from the research community received during a public consultation period that closed in June 2024.
