Freshwater mussel plate!
A petri plate full of juvenile freshwater mussels. This species is fatmucket (Lampsilis siliquoidea) that has been reared in the laboratory especially for testing purposes. The mussels in this picture are all around 1 year old. The distinct green rays seen on the shells are a characteristic feature of the fatmuckets, with many intricate designs that can range from green to brown rays. Fatmuckets are commonly found in Southern Ontario, and have one of the widest freshwater mussel ranges here in Canada.
