In 2014 the Landscape Architecture programs at the University of Guelph established the first chapter of the Honor Society of Landscape Architects, Sigma Lambda Alpha, outside of the United States. The society, like other professional honour societies, recognizes leadership and scholarship among the student body. Sigma Lambda Alpha is the only honour society for landscape architecture and it has more than fifty chapters and 8,000 members - it’s name figuratively represents the the society: Scholar, Landscape Architect. Guelph’s chartering class included 18 high-achieving students in their final two years of study in the Bachelor and Master of Landscape Architecture degree programs. Members of Sigma Lambda Alpha are eligible to apply for scholarships and travel awards. In the chapter’s chartering year, BLA student Sara de Korte competed successfully to win the undergraduate Sigma Lambda Alpha scholarship which she is using to support her senior thesis project. The University of Guelph has the longest-established landscape architecture programs in Canada. The programs are professionally-accredited and prepare students to become registered landscape architects eligible to practice in North America and abroad.
