The MSc in Capacity Development & Extension at the University of Guelph is aimed at students interested in acquiring the theoretical foundation and applied skills for the interdisciplinary field of agricultural knowledge management, rural and environmental communication, adult learning and applied leadership and organizational change studies. CDE is a research-oriented program, designed with two kinds of student in mind: 1) those interested in the scholarly study of knowledge management and learning processes for environmental and agricultural contexts, including rural and remote communities in Canada and/or internationally; and 2) mid-career educators, community activists and communicators interested in familiarizing themselves with the scholarly literature in this field and in pursuing a specific research project.
While some previous study or work related to local or international community development experience is preferred, this is not a requirement for entry into the CDE MSc, and we welcome applicants of all disciplinary and professional backgrounds.
The CDE program is self-funded. Students are responsible for the entire cost of the program. Eligible in-course MSc students may apply for fellowships, awards, teaching assistantships and research assistantships.
In addition to course work, students write a thesis or major research paper on a topic approved by his/her Advisory Committee. The THESIS option requires that students complete six courses (three core courses, plus two restricted electives, plus one open elective), in addition to the thesis. The MAJOR PAPER option requires that students complete eight courses (three core courses, plus four restricted electives, plus one open elective), in addition to the major research paper.
