Course Development / Design

Course design, redesign, development or redevelopment is not necessarily CUPE work. Academic units have the latitude to assign this work to anyone deemed appropriate. Cases of such standalone course design/development or redevelopment are normally offered as SL-2 or GSA-2 appointments and duties and payment are negotiated outside of the hiring system.

If/when an Academic Unit determines that Course Design/Development is CUPE work, the following applies:

Article 1.04(d): "'‘Course Design’ is defined as work which involves the design of a degree credit course, or portion thereof, and which may be assigned as a Sessional Lecturer Work Assignment. It is understood that such work may be pro-rated as determined by management"

Appendix F(d): “A Sessional Lecturer who has successfully completed a work assignment to design a degree credit course (i.e. for a particular course) shall be eligible to exercise a RoFR to a work assignment for that same course should a Sessional Lecturer work assignment be made in one of the immediately following two (2) semesters..”

Interpretation:

Course design, re-design, development or re-development is not included in CUPE 3913 Unit 2 unless it is part of a larger work assignment.

An academic unit may build the course design, re-design, development or re-development into an SL (Unit 2) work assignment:

  • On the posting, in addition to the anticipated teaching responsibilities, include course development details under 'Other Duties'.
  • Be very clear on the posting what the development entails.
  • Remuneration is determined by the hiring unit (it may be the equivalent to a work assignment or a portion thereof (e.g., 0.5), or can be paid at the Hourly Schedule B rate).  See: Pro-Rating SL Work Assignments
  • This work assignment earns a seniority point and the Right of First Refusal.
  • If the work assignment spans more than one semester, the original course development posting can be cloned. This separate posting and Offer ensures the accurate accrual of Seniority (e.g., one SP for the course development and one SP for the teaching of the course).
