Pro-Rating SL Work Assignments

Unit 2: 14.07 Pro-Rating

"It is agreed that management may pro-rate work assignments based on either percentage of workload (based on a full semester work assignment) or the percentage of time (based on a full semester). Such prorating may recognize a work assignment in which a Sessional Lecturer is employed to complete less than the equivalent of a full semester work assignment, or may recognize a work assignment in which a Sessional Lecturer is employed to complete more than the equivalent of a full semester work assignment. In such atypical situations, the Union shall be advised in writing of the pro-rating. As required, a meeting will be called to discuss the specific work assignment and the implementation arrangements. The meeting will be held no less than fifteen (15) days prior to the work assignment being posted, except in circumstances in which the work assignment was not anticipated. In such circumstances, the Union will be advised as soon as possible following the University having become aware of the need for the unanticipated work assignment, and, as required, a meeting will be called within five (5) days."

Interpretation

  • A SL work assignment can be prorated up or down
  • Academic units must have a strong rationale for doing so and are required to consult FASR prior to prorating a course.
  • Academic units will articulate the Prorating details on both the Posting and the Offer ('Other (Prorated) Details')
  • Complete the details and rationale on this form.
    • Include whether this is a first-time pro-rated assignment, or if it is regularly pro-rated from semester to semester offering
  • At the end of the form, select "Send me an email receipt of my responses".  Then, forward this email to FASR (fasr.jobs@uoguelph.ca), copying your FASR Consultant
  • FASR will notify CUPE
  • This information is also available to CUPE on the Posting and Offer Reports.

As an alternative to prorating a SL work assignment up, academic units may want to consider Article 14.10 (b) (supplemental payment for large class sizes) or assigning TA support.
