What if a TA within their Job Security Period (JSP) does not, or is not able to, apply before the deadline?

Graduate students within their JSP have been guaranteed specific work assignment(s) in their Offer of Admission (i.e., the Graduate Student Guaranteed Income/Funding Form).  To be considered for fulfillment of a secured position(s), they must apply to at least one posting in the semester in which they will be assigned a secured position, and indicate they are in LoC 1.  The graduate funding form for students indicates they must apply online or they will not be given their JSP.  Messaging to TAs is key.  Please ensure TAs are aware of the importance of this process and point them to this FAQ: What is a Job Security Period (JSP)?

At the same time, there may be special circumstances when a TA with JSP is not able to apply before the deadline.  Examples include:

  • A TA who is off-site and without internet connection
  • A new TA who does not yet have a UofG ID

In these circumstances:

  • Identify one work assignment posting that is to be assigned to a JSP TA and keep that posting open/available for as long as necessary (i.e.., an extended deadline).
  • Inform TAs they need to apply while this work assignment is available. It is critical that the TA identifies their Level of Consideration as Level 1.
  • This allows the academic unit to use the JSP assigned procedures (see The Graduate Student Job Security Period (JSP)
  • Update the Admin Memo to record the change.

Here's an example:  If TA work assignment postings for the Fall semester are typically made available/posted and expire in May, this could miss some students leaving beforehand to remote research locations, or those not yet registered as a graduate student. By having one work assignment posted early and expiring late, these students will have an opportunity to get into the system in order for their JSP to be fulfilled when academic units make Offers.
