Veterinary Capacity Program Invests in Animal and Human Health
The Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) has been a world leader in veterinary health care, teaching and research since 1862. It consistently ranks in the top ten veterinary schools in the world by the prestigious Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World Rankings. In 2016, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) granted continued full accreditation to OVC for another seven years, the maximum period permitted. A key factor in OVC’s on-going success is the partnership between the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness and the University of Guelph that supports the college’s Veterinary Capacity Program.
The Veterinary Capacity Program supports:
- A veterinary externship program for fourth year veterinary students to consolidate their skills and knowledge through an eight-week placement in a large animal or mixed animal practice.
- The OVC's Health Sciences Centre where student veterinarians work closely with clinical faculty who provide a wide array of services to food animals, horses and companion animals. The Centre is a key component of undergraduate, graduate, intern and resident training.
- Research by post-graduate students in food animal production, emergency management, and agriculture/rural policy topics. Candidates for the Doctor of Veterinary Science (DVSc) degree research solutions to issues of provincial significance in animal health, and raise the standard of veterinary care and public health in Ontario by graduating highly qualified personnel.
- Research, education and knowledge mobilization at the Centre for Public Health and Zoonoses. CPHAZ provides leadership in the public health-animal-environment interface, and is part of the OVC.
