Building a surveillance and monitoring tool for avian influenza outbreaks in Ontario
Lead Applicant: Rozita Dara
Research Priority: Animal Health & Welfare Projects
Program Type: Tier 1
Funding Cycle: 2022/2023
Research Centre: NA
Research Summary: This study aims to design and evaluate a decision support system (DSS) that uses a diverse set of data sources (e.g., Twitter, weather information, poultry density) to detect highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) sooner and predict the risk of future avian influenza (AI) events. The system will use continuous and diverse strategies for data collection, integration and analysis to provide early warnings of AI outbreaks. The decision support framework will be expanded and adapted for use in Ontario (and Canada) by collecting and analyzing new data sources and historical AI outbreak information in Ontario and other Canadian provinces.
