Research Summary: The laying cycle of turkey breeders is short with a low peak in egg production. To maximize production and prolong the laying cycle, the turkey industry recommends using high light intensities to manage breeder flocks. However, the efficacy of high intensity on reproduction has not yet been scientifically demonstrated and may compromise welfare by increasing stress and aggression. Furthermore, while the use of red spectrum LED lighting can accelerate sexual maturation and improve egg production in layers, broiler breeders, quail, ducks, and geese, its effectiveness in turkey breeders remains to be demonstrated. Therefore, our overall goal is to investigate the effects of two light sources (white or red spectrum) at two intensity levels (high or low) to determine the best parameters for turkey breeder welfare and performance, and to provide producers with a lighting option designed specifically for their needs.
