Research Summary: To achieve an optimal shelf-life of packaged fresh produce, it is essential to control the package headspace air composition accurately. This project will develop a novel enhanced modified atmosphere packaging (EMAP) system for fresh produce by exploiting precursor technology for controlled release of chlorine dioxide and ethyl formate vapours into package headspace to inhibit bacteria growth. This will result in cutting-edge EMAP systems for fresh produce, benefiting producers, packaging converters, and consumers in Ontario.
