Quantifying ephemeral gully erosion in Lake Erie basin using field experimentation and modeling

Lead Applicant: Prasad Daggupati

Research Priority: Water Quality & Quantity

Program Type: Tier 1

Funding Cycle: 2021/2022

Research Centre: NA

Research Summary: Erosion processes from sheet/rills in agricultural fields and the resulting soil loss has been studied extensively, but there is little research on the impact of ephemeral gullies (EGs), which are concentrated flow areas of soil erosion that transfer fine sediment and phosphorus from upland agricultural fields. This novel project will identify and estimate soil loss from EGs in Lake Erie basin. Overall, this study will provide growers and policy makers with appropriate management decisions to mitigate EGs, thereby improving soil health and overall environmental sustainability.
