New Liskeard SPUD Unit

The SPUD Unit at the Ontario Crops Research Centre – New Liskeard consists of a tissue culture laboratory, greenhouses and cold storage facilities.

Research areas and outcomes

In the potato program of the SPUD Unit, ‘nuclear’ potato plantlets and miniatures are produced for Ontario seed potato producers.

Strawberries and raspberry plantlets are produced for the Ontario Plant Propagation Program. Other tissue culturing involves the establishment in-vitro, heat treatment and production of virus-tested plantlets for crop breeders.

Research in the SPUD Unit includes evaluating in-vitro and in-vivo production techniques for nuclear potato, raspberry, strawberry, garlic and asparagus propagules.
