College of Arts June 2024 Convocation Awards Ceremony

The College of Arts Convocation Awards Ceremony in Summer 2024, attendees and donors socializing in the Arts Research Centre Lobby.

The College of Arts at the University of Guelph is proud to host its annual Convocation Awards ceremony on Thursday, June 13 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Arts Research Centre (ARC). The event, dedicated to recognizing the exceptional achievements of Undergraduate students in the College of Arts, will bring together University student award recipients, award donors, faculty, staff, and other members of the University community. A range of prestigious awards will be presented to students by College of Arts faculty members. The event program and a full listing of awards and recipients can be found below.

Dean's Message

Welcome to the College of Arts' annual Convocation Awards Ceremony celebrating outstanding achievements of College of Arts students. This is a wonderful opportunity to recognize the dedication and love of learning that underlies the teaching and learning activities in which we engage. We are most grateful to donors for establishing awards and for their continued support. Their ongoing participation in the University of Guelph’s educational mission is most appreciated and helps us to celebrate student achievements to the greatest extent we can.

Event Itinerary

12:30 pm - 1:15 pm Registration, and Mix and Mingle Register in the Arts Research Centre (ARC) Lobby, where you may also socialize with award recipients, donors, and guests!
1:15 pm - 2:00 pm Award Ceremony The ceremony is held in room 113.
2:00 pm - 2:30 pm Mix and Mingle Socialize with award recipients, donors, and guests.
2:30 pm End of Event Thank you to all attendees and donors, and congratulations to each award recipient!

College of Arts Medal

Award Recipient:

Awarded to a graduating student with the highest cumulative average within the College of Arts.

David Murray Medal in Arts

Award Recipient:

  • Kelly Hughes

Selected and awarded by the Awards Committee of the College of Arts. The recipient is the College of Arts nominee for the Winegard Medal.


Department of History

Presented by: Dr. Matthew Hayday

Crowley/Jackman Prize in History

Award Recipient:

  • Kelly Hughes

Endowed by Terry Crowley, former chair of the Department of History, and his partner Terry Jackman, a Guelph lawyer. Awarded to the student with the highest cumulative average within the Department of History.

Elizabeth Ewan Scottish Studies Prize

Award Recipient:

  • Andrew Manners

Established by Elizabeth Ewan’s friends, family, colleagues, and former students in honour of her longstanding contribution to the University and to Scottish Studies upon her retirement. Awarded to the student with the highest grade in HIST*4040 or when this course is not offered, the highest standing in HIST*4470 and HIST*4970 in an academic year.

Priscilla and Stanford Reid Trust Prize

Award Recipient:

  • Rhys Blake

Established in honour the first chair of the History Department, Stanford Reid, and his wife, Priscilla Reid to acknowledge and award the best student-written paper about the history of Presbyterianism and/or the Reformed tradition.

Ruth and Eber Pollard Prize in Canadian History

Award Recipient:

  • Kyra Giancaterino

Established by the Guelph Historical Society and supported by Ruth and Eber Pollard in recognition of Ruth and Eber Pollard's contribution as President and Treasurer, respectively, of the Society during the years 1972 to 1993. Awarded to a student from the History Major with the strongest written essay focused on Canadian History.

W S Reid Undergraduate Thesis Prize

Award Recipient:

  • Megan Gamble

In honour of W. S. Reid, Professor Emeritus. Awarded to an undergraduate student enrolled in the honours History program who submitted the best paper for courses HIST*4470/HIST*4970 Special History Project Seminar I and II on a non-Canadian topic.

W S Reid Essay Prize

Award Recipient:

  • Robin Blaise-Kirwin

In honour of W.S. Reid, Professor Emeritus. Awarded to an undergraduate student enrolled in the general or honours program in History who has submitted the best essay for a 4000 level course in History.


Department of Philosophy

Presented by: Dr. Don Dedrick

Jakob Amstutz Prize

Award Recipient:

  • Meghan Jenna Spence

Established in memory of Jakob Amstutz, a valued faculty member of the Philosophy department for more than twenty years. Awarded to a recently graduated or graduating student with the highest cumulative average from the Honours Philosophy program.


School of English and Theatre Studies

Presented by: Dr. Sally Hickson

Gold Medal in English

Award Recipient:

  • George Croal

Offered by the faculty of the English Section of the School of Literatures and Performance Studies in English. Awarded to a graduating student who has achieved the highest standing in honours work in English and completed at least 15.0 course credits of the program at the University of Guelph.

J Percy Smith Drama Prize

Award Recipient:

  • Sophie Hughes

Awarded to a graduating honours student in Drama with high academic standing in Drama courses, who has also made a worthy contribution to drama activities within the School of English and Theatre Studies.

Michael J F Tompkins Scholarship

Award Recipient:

  • Diya Singh

Established in memory of Michael Tompkins, Governor General's Medalist in 1990. Completed nomination forms and nominated essays should be submitted to the English Department by April 1 by a faculty member. Awarded to a student registered in Honours English specialization with a minimum of 10.0 credits and the best essay of at least 2500 words in a 3000- or 4000-level English course.


School of Fine Art and Music

Presented by: Dr. Martin Pearce

Friends of Music Book Prize

Award Recipient:

  • Ethan Burnside

Established by the Friends of Music of the University of Guelph. Awarded to a student who has completed at least 15.0 credits toward the honours B.A. with a major in Music and has the highest cumulative average in Music courses in the given year.

Gloria Guthrie Memorial Music Prize

Award Recipient:

  • Africa Catherine Charlene Estuart

Awarded to a student graduating in honours Music who has obtained the highest average above 80% in Music courses.

Printmaking Prizes

Award Recipients:

Awarded to students judged to have made outstanding academic contributions to the practice of printmaking during the semester.

Samuel and Saidye Bronfman Family Foundation Printmaking Prize

Award Recipients:

  • Patrizia Piraino-Crandon

Awarded to students enrolled in a printmaking course at any level who produce the most outstanding prints during the semester. The prize-winning print will become part of the Print Study Collection.


School of Languages and Literatures

Faculty Prizes in Classics

Awarded to students selected by members of the Classics Section of the School of Languages and Literatures and by the Director of the School.

Nancy Stoten Honours Prize in French

Award Recipient:

  • Fiona Ehrismann

Provided by the parents, family and friends of Nancy Stoten, a former student in French Studies. Awarded to students registered in the French Studies who have achieved the highest average in the five best courses in French at the 3000- and 4000-level.

Professor Victor J Matthews Memorial Prize in Classics

Award Recipient:

  • Jennifer Debowy

Established in memory of Dr. Victor J. Matthews, a distinguished teacher of Classics for almost 40 years and varsity cross-country team head coach. Awarded to the student with the highest cumulative average in 4.0 credits of courses taken in Classical Studies, Greek or Latin beyond the 2000 level.


Serving Scholar Prize

Presented by: Dr. John Walsh

Award Recipients:

  • Bombardier Evan Curtis from the 11th Field Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery

  • Corporal Hunter Rusk from the Royal Highland Fusiliers of Canada

Established by Dr John Walsh and Mrs. Mary Walsh, the Serving Scholar Prize recognizes the academic excellence and achievement of a graduating University of Guelph student currently serving in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) including the CAF Reserves.
