Details

In a 2012 article in "Innes Review", three scholars reported th
eir discovery that four Latin proverbs painted on the wall of the warming ho
use at Inchcolm Abbey were derived from the "Manipulus florum", a collectio
n of authoritative Latin quotations compiled at Paris in 1306. This paper wi
ll demonstrate that the most famous abbot of Inchcolm, Walter Bower (d.1449
), employed the "Manipulus" in composing his famous historical work, the "
Scotichronicon" (1447). This discovery has some significant implications bot
h for understanding Bower's methodology and for reconstructing the library t
hat he used.
