"Constructing A Musical Phrase from the Ground Up."

In 1981
ELLEN FULLMAN began developing the “Long String Instrument,” an installatio
n of dozens of wires fifty feet or more in length, tuned in Just Intonationand ‘bowed’ with rosin coated fingers. Fullman has developed a unique notat
ion system to choreograph the performer’s movements, exploring sonic eventsthat occur at specific nodal point locations along the string-length of theinstrument. She has recorded extensively with this unusual instrument and h
as collaborated with such luminary figures as composer Pauline Oliveros, ch
oreographer Deborah Hay, the Kronos Quartet, and Keiji Haino. She has beenthe recipient of numerous awards, commissions and residencies including: D
AAD Artists-in-Berlin Program residency, Japan/U.S. Friendship Commission/N
EA Fellowship for Japan, Meet the Composer, Reader's Digest Consortium Com
mission, Artist Trust/Washington State Arts Commission Fellowship, and art
ist-in-residence at Headlands Center for the Arts. Her music was represe
n
ted in The American Century; Art and Culture, 1 950-2000 at The Whitney Mu
seum, and she has performed in venues and festivals in Europe, Japan, andthe Americas including: Instal, Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors, Other Minds
, the Walker Art Center and Donaueschinger Musiktage. Her release “Ort”, wi
th Berlin-based collaborator Jörg Hiller, was selected in the top 50 record
ings of 2004 by The Wire (London) and “Fluctuations” with trombonist MoniqueBuzzarté on Deep Listening was included in the Wire top 50 of 2008.

THE
RESA WONG is a cellist, vocalist, composer and improviser actively explori
ng the intersection where music meets with the creative spirit of experiment
ation, improvisation and the synergy of multiple disciplines. Bridging area
s of music, dance, theater and visual art, Wong is interested in finding
the potential for transformation in each work for both the artist and receiv
er alike. Her recent works include The Unlearning, a debut album released t
o critical acclaim on Tzadik records and O Sleep, an improvised opera she d
irected exploring the conundrum of sleep and dream life. Wong has presented
her music internationally at such venues as Fondation Cartier in Paris, Yer
ba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, Fabbrica Europa in Florence
Italy, Unlimited 21 Festival in Wels, Austria and at The Stone in New YorkCity. More on her work can be found at: www.theresawong.org
