Why Arts Matter Research Speaker Series: Power in Representation

The College of Arts, in partnership with the International Institute for Critical Studies and Improvisation (IICSI), are excited to announce the second installment of our Why Arts Matter research speaker series, an exploration of the intersections between disciplines, expertise and themes that impact individual experiences, social life and culture.

The second event in this series, Power in Representation, will feature a dynamic discussion with panelists Dr. Amanda Boetzkes, Dr. John Russon and Anna Gaby-Trotz. Together, they will explore how artistic practices challenge traditional authority in representation.

Discussion Overview:

This panel will examine how art intersects with pressing social and environmental issues, from reimagining cultural foundations to reshaping perceptions of identity, the body and social relations. Delving into connections between art, identity formation, the life sciences and global energy systems, our speakers will consider how creative expression serves as a critical lens for understanding value, meaning, perception and consciousness.

After the main discussion, there will be a brief Q&A session with the audience. Please note that, while the event will be video recorded for later distribution, audience members will not be included in the recording.
