Dr. Occhietti will join the School of Fine Art and Music as a postdoctoral fellow, having won a presitigious fellowship from the FRQSC (Fonds de Recherche Québeçois -- Société et Culture), for which she was the top-ranking candidate.
Dr. Occhietti’s research explores how artworks demonstrate, represent, and resist economic movement. Through the analysis of salient works of art, Dr. Occhietti illuminates key moments of economic process from primary accumulation to financialization. Her approach is characterized by a transhistorical and transnational analysis of art, with a focus on the relationship between materiality and abstraction. She has presented her work in Japan, Argentina, England, Canada, France, Spain and Italy. At the University of Guelph, she will be pursuing her new research project, “Financialization, Nature and Art: Contemporary Art and the New Frontiers of Investment,” which investigates how contemporary art uncovers the new ecologies of finance capital.
Please join us in extending a warm welcome to Dr. Occhietti!
