Experiential Learning Fellowship (ELF) Recipients 

The College of Arts is proud to support the development and implementation of experiential learning initiatives and innovative pedagogies. Congratulations to all of our winners! 

2024 Recipients

Brandon Carroll | FREN 3700 Experiential Learning and Language | SOLAL

  • Students participated in activities and placements under the supervision of external partners, allowing them to combine academic learning and real-world professional application, and ultimately preparing them for careers where linguistic proficiency in French is essential. 

Ajay Heble | IMPR 6020 Arts-Based Community Making | IICSI

  • Students designed and implemented an original project exploring the history of labour in Canada interwoven with the current experience of unionized workers. This project involved a series of community-based workshops and performances reaching the broader University of Guelph community. 

Stephanie Nutting | FREN 3110 Storytelling in the Francophone World | SOLAL

  • Students engaged in a unique guest lecture from an Indigenous (Wendat), Francophone theatre artist and storyteller, involving coaching on approaching storytelling as a craft. 

Kim Francis | MUSC 1200 Creative Industries | SOFAM

  • Students gain professional understanding of the music industry through guest experts, industry-oriented assignments (creating a press kit and CV, grant writing, pitching an event, etc.) that help them begin to develop a professional portfolio and understand the needs of creative industry.  

Kim Francis | MUSC 3800 Topics in Music History/Analysis | SOFAM

  • In this project, students receive training and direction from a community partner and consulting producer to arrange and perform fully staged excerpts from a musical theatre production. This provides them with hands-on experience and training akin to working in a musical theatre troupe, preparing them for work post-graduation with community groups or teaching in school music programs.

Kim Francis | HUMN 4190 Experiential Learning | DEANS

  • Students were embedded in a research team running workshops that brought mime techniques to community volunteers diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Students engaged collectively in research creation and data capture, contributing to a SSHRC Partnership Engage Grant to fund future research. 

2023 Recipients

Kim McLeod  | THST*3190/THST*4190 Theatre Workshop III & IV | SETS

  •  Students staged devised work alongside a set of micro plays by professional playwrights as part of the bi-annual Climate Change Theatre Action worldwide festival

Deirdre McCorkindale | BLCK*2000 Black Canadian History | Interdisciplinary

  • Students took on the role of historian and participated in a group project surrounding Black Canadian history.As part of the project, students attended an event launch held at the Chatham Kent Black Historical Society for Freedom in Print, a SSCHRC funded research project conducted by the University of Guelph, Huron College at Western, and the Chatham Kent Black Historical Society

Troy Hourie | Various THST | SETS

  • Students took part in an intense workshop, working directly with members of the artistic team of the leading Portuguese international puppetry festival, Teatro e Marionetas de Mandrágora.  

2022 Recipients 

Kim Francis & Troy Hourie | HUMN*3180/MUSC*4200/THST*3010 Mediated Scenography for the Contemporary Operatic Stage | SOFAM & SETS

  • Students created innovative set designs for three new operatic works commissioned by Musique 3 Femme of Montreal. These performances were debuted at the 30th annual Feminist Theory and Music conference, hosted at UofG this past summer. 

Sally Hickson | Field School - Matera: From Caves to Contemporary Renaissance | SOFAM & SETS

Jeannette Hicks | First Year Seminar - UNIV*1200-06: Can Art Change the World? | PHIL 

  • In this experiential learning first year seminar, students will connect with community partners in the arts to engage in critical dialogue about art and social justice. 

Peter Kuling | THST*2270 Theatre Research II | SETS

  • In this EL project, students will take part in the voice-over recording of Macbeth VR, currently under development at UofG. Students will participate in three days of recording in a professional recording studio with ACRTA performers. 

Mark Lipton | HUMN*3190 & 4190 Experiential Learning | SETS

  • As a culmination of a multi-year pilot course where students gain academic credit for working at the Student Support Network, Dr. Lipton and Melanie Bowman (SSN) will present at the OUCQA Learning Outcomes Symposuim in October 2022. 

Ania Wroblewski | FREN*6020 Topics in French Literature | SOLAL 

  • In this graduate EL initiative, students in Dr. Wroblewski's class will partner with the Centre for Creative Photography to create a digital exposition to be presented at a conference at the University of Arizona.
