Teaching Excellence Awards
Each year, the College of Arts recognizes the outstanding contributions of faculty members, sessional instructors, and graduate teaching assistants through its Teaching Excellence Awards. These awards celebrate individuals who have demonstrated excellence in teaching, innovation, and dedication to student learning within the College of Arts.
The following sections provide details on this year's award winners, as well as information on how to nominate deserving candidates for the next round of awards. Whether you are a student, colleague, or department head, your nominations help to recognize and celebrate exceptional teaching and mentorship across the College of Arts.
2023/24 Award Winners
Faculty Teaching Excellence Award
John Hacker-Wright (Philosophy)
John Hacker-Wright has been recognized with the Faculty Teaching Excellence Award for his outstanding contributions to Philosophy. John's ability to inspire critical thinking and nurture intellectual curiosity has been consistently commended by both students and colleagues.
CLA/Sessional Teaching Excellence Award
Jay Oliver (Classical Studies)
Jay Oliver's exceptional commitment to delivering high-quality instruction in the School of Languages and Literatures has earned them the CLA/Sessional Teaching Excellence Award. Their approachable teaching style and dedication to student success have made a lasting impact on students.
Graduate Teaching Assistant Teaching Excellence Award for MA
Callie Gibson (European Studies)
The Committee commends Callie Gibson for her engaging approach to teaching and commitment to helping students succeed in their European Studies coursework. Callie's innovative teaching style fosters a dynamic and supportive learning environment, encouraging student growth and exploration.
Graduate Teaching Assistant Teaching Excellence Award for PhD
Stephen Donnelly (Critical Studies in Improvisation)
Stephen Donnelly has been honored with the PhD Teaching Excellence Award for his pioneering teaching methods in Critical Studies in Improvisation. His creative approach to fostering collaboration and innovation in the classroom has earned him high praise from students and faculty alike.
How to Apply for Teaching Excellence Awards
Faculty Teaching Excellence Award
Full-time faculty who have taught in the College of Arts for at least two years are eligible. The nomination package should include teaching materials, student and colleague recommendations, and be no longer than 35 pages. Nominations should be submitted to the department Chair, who will assist in the process.
Graduate Teaching Assistant Teaching Excellence Award
Graduate assistants who have taught in the College of Arts during the last three semesters are eligible. One award is for MA GTAs and one for PhD GTAs. The nomination package should include teaching materials and student recommendations, and must not exceed 35 pages. Nominations should be submitted to the department Chair for assistance with the process.
Sessional and CLA Teaching Excellence Award
Sessional and CLA instructors who have taught in the College of Arts over the past three semesters are eligible. The nomination package should include teaching materials, recommendations from students and faculty, and be limited to 35 pages. Nominations should be directed to the department Chair, who will assist with the submission process.
