Jan Tumlir is an art-writer, teacher and curator who lives in L
os Angeles. He is a contributing editor for the local art journal X-TRA; h
is articles appear regularly in Artforum, Aperture, Flash Art and occasion
ally in Art Review and Frieze. In addition, he has written catalog essays f
or such artists as Bas Jan Ader, Uta Barth, John Divola, Jorge Pardo, Cy
prien Gaillard and most recently, James Welling. Tumlir is a member of the
humanities and sciences faculty at Art Center College of Design, and has inthe past taught at Otis, CalArts, USC, UCR and UCLA.

This lecture con
cerns the relation of black and white monochrome painting to sound, and spe
cifically noise music. It will touch on the origins of both forms within thework of the Russian Avant-Gardes at the start of the twentieth century, an
d then track its development into the present.
