A survey of Ancient Greek and Roman philosophy, combining some outside reading with a more detailed examination in class of representative philosophers including Anaximander, Heraclitus, Parmenides, Plato, and Aristotle.
Textbook(s):
Required texts: (1) A Presocratics Reader (Curd and McKirahan) [Hackett ISBN 0-87220-326-3]; (2) Plato’s Phaedo (Grube translation) [Hackett ISBN 0-915144-18-2]; (3) The Philosophy of Aristotle (edited by Bambrough) [Signet ISBN 0-451-528875].
Course requirements/Evaluation:
a) Either two 1250 word essays (25% each) or one 2500 word essay (50%) on works not covered in class, and
b) a final exam on the class readings (50%).
