Dr. Phanuel Antwi graduated from the University of Guelph College of Arts with an English degree in 2004. He later went on to earn both his MA (2006) and Ph.D (2011) in English and Cultural Studies from MacMaster University.

Travelling to Canada's east coast in 2011, Antwi accepted an Assistant Professor position at Saint Mary's University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he worked until 2014. Antwi's teaching focus was on Literature and Cultures of the Black Atlantic. Later in 2014, travelling to the opposite coast, Antwi accepted an Assistant Professor position at the University of British Columbia, where he currently teaches Canadian Literature. Antwi specifically teaches on the subjects of gender, race, sexuality, and social justice.

Antwi's research interests include: Canadian literature cultural studies, gender and sexuality and postcolonial literatures, settler colonial studies and Black Atlantic and diaspora studies. He has published numerous articles in journals such as Interventions, Affinities, and Studies in Canadian Literature. His most recent project is titled "Currencies of Blackness: Faithfulness, Cheerfulness and Politeness in Settler Writing."
