Knowing “why” is a singular achievement, distinct from other scientific accomplishments. This course focuses on the philosophy of scientific explanation and related issues including reduction, emergence, idealization and modeling. The emphasis is on contemporary work. If possible, the course will meet face-to-face Mondays 2:30 - 5:20. Whether a face-to-face meeting will be possible depends on university guidelines and student availability. Alternatively, the class will be held remotely during the same time.
