Joseph (J) Shea-Carter

Joseph (J) Shea-Carter studies, teaches, and writes predominately on Canadian literatures. Their PhD dissertation focuses on contemporary queer poetry and poetics from some of the country’s foremost experimental writers like Jordan Abel, T. Liem, Lisa Robertson, and Erín Moure.

 

Their secondary research focuses on the interdisciplinary intersections between sound, literature, and music. For instance, in 2023 they collaborated with Jordan Abel to soundtrack him reading from his novel, Empty Spaces. In 2024 they also interviewed and wrote the first scholarly article on the world-renowned DJs, Jack Rollo and Elaine Tierney of Time is Away fame. Their peer reviewed paper will appear in a forthcoming issue of Amodern. 
 

In addition, they have published or have forthcoming work in The Ex-Puritan, Arc Poetry Magazine, The Capilano Review, and Canadian Literature.

 

J completed their MA with a focus on 19th century realist (Victorian) literature and theory at the University of Toronto in 2015. In 2014 they graduated with an honours BA in English and Philosophy from the University of Toronto with high distinction. 
 

Their other areas of research interest include modernist literatures, medieval literatures, religion studies, existential thought, cinema, and their favourite philosopher, Walter Benjamin. 

 

They have taught ENGL3630, “Writing Canada” and ENGL*2130, “Literature and Social Change.” In 2022 they were nominated for and won The College of Arts Teaching Excellence Award.
