Joseph (J) Shea-Carter

Joseph (J) Shea-Carter studies, teaches, and writes predominately on Canadian literatures. Their PhD dissertation focuses on contemporary queer poetry, writing, and poetics from some of the country’s foremost experimental writers like Jordan Abel, T. Liem, and Lisa Robertson.
Their secondary research focuses on the interdisciplinary intersections between sound, literature, and music. In 2023 they collaborated with Jordan Abel to soundtrack him reading from his latest award-winning novel, Empty Spaces. In 2024 they also interviewed and wrote the first scholarly article on the world-renowned DJs, Jack Rollo and Elaine Tierney who make up Time is Away. Their peer reviewed paper will appear in a forthcoming issue of Amodern.
They have published or have forthcoming work in The Ex-Puritan, ARC Poetry, The Capilano Review, The Malahat Review, and Canadian Literature.
J completed their MA with a focus on Victorian literature and theory at the University of Toronto in 2015. In 2014 they graduated with an honours BA in English and Philosophy from the University of Toronto with high distinction.
They have taught ENGL3630, “Writing Canada” and ENGL*2130, “Literature and Social Change.” In 2022 they were nominated for and won The College of Arts Teaching Excellence Award. Outside of The University of Guelph they are a lecturer in the Studies in Arts & Culture Department (STAC) at Brock University.
