After completing his undergrad from the University of Guelph in 1988 for Management Economics, Day returned to the U of G to complete his Master of Arts in History.

Shawn went on to complete not one, but two PhDs - the first in 2008 in 19th Century Canadian Business History from McMaster and the second 2019 in Cultural Geography from University College Cork in Ireland. Currently, Shawn is a lecturer at the University College Cork in Digital Arts and Humanities and researching with the School of Geography. Day is also Chair of the Irish Canadian Society since 2016, and Director of the European Health Futures Forum since 2011.
