Indigenous Advocacy Talk with Genievieve Borg

We hope that you can join us for the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences National Truth and Reconciliation Day Presentation and Discussion with Genievieve Borg, Ph.D Candidate, Department of Chemistry.

The event will be held in the Summerlee Science Complex, Room 1511, on September 29, 2023, between 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm. Light refreshments will be provided.

Genievieve is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Chemistry in Dr. Kathryn Preuss' research group. Recently, she wrote an editorial for the journal Inorganic Chemistry titled "An Indigenous Journey to Belonging". The editorial details her experience as an Indigenous woman in chemistry and the barriers she has faced toward her education and finding her own path as a result of colonialism. The editorial was accompanied by cover art that features her, her story and drawing of her hand-made artwork.

 After reading her editorial, the organizing committee of the 106th Canadian Chemistry Conference and Exhibition invited her to give an oral presentation in their EDI themed symposium: Indigenous Relationships in Chemistry.  

In addition to the article and the conference, she has participated in many Indigenization efforts on campus. Genievieve currently holds the position of Co-Chair on the Indigenous Student Society. In an effort toward Indigenizing campus ceremonies, she participated as a part of the drumming circle that performed at the Installation ceremonies of President Charlotte Yates and Chancellor Mary Anne Chambers, as well as the land acknowledgement video used at convocation ceremonies. She actively seeks to educate the campus community on Indigenous issues and Canada's history with Indigenous Peoples. On September 30th, 2022, she spoke at the Moment of Reflection held at Branion plaza and shared the experiences her family has had with racism and Residential Schools.

She is a proud member of including Wikwemikong First Nation, the Indigenous Student Society, and the University of Guelph.
