Education and Employment Background

Dr. Pascal Matsakis received his PhD from Paul Sabatier University in Toulouse, France in 1998. Between 1997 and 1999 he held a position as a Teacher-cum-Researcher in the Toulouse Institute of Research in Computer Science at Paul Sabatier University. Matsakis then held a Visiting Assistant Professor position (1999-2000) and an Assistant Professor position (2000-2002) at the University of Missouri-Columbia in the Department of Computer Engineering and Computer Science. Matsakis joined the School of Computer Science at the University of Guelph in 2002 where he is now a full professor.

Research Themes

Matsakis's research focuses on the design of relative position descriptors and the modelling of spatial relationships between regions in 2-D and 3-D images. These descriptors and relationships are being investigated in many disciplines (e.g., artificial intelligence, cognitive science, linguistics, geography) and find applications in various domains (e.g., human-robot communication, geographic information systems, medical imaging, scene description).
