Learning Enhancement in the SoCS

The School of Computer Science is proud to announce that several faculty members have been awarded funding through the University of Guelph's Learning Enhancement Fund (LEF).

Associate Professors Judi McCuaig and Michael Wirth, members of the Interactive Cognitive Computing group, and Assistant Professor Daniel Gillis, will apply the LEF funds over the next year to enhance learning opportunities in several undergraduate courses.

McCuaig and Wirth will transform the first year CIS*1500 course "through the use of the inexpensive Raspberry Pi single board computers."  According to McCuaig, "The Raspberry Pi platform encourages exploration, curiosity, and experimentation, which will help students develop the problem solving skills needed to be successful computer scientists."

Gillis will be working with the Institute for Community Engaged Scholarship to develop a database and website that will connect community members with faculty who wish to enhance the classroom experience using real-life problems. The proposal will establish community-engaged scholarship within the upper year courses of CIS*3750 and CIS*4900. Click here for full details on their projects.
