Mechatronics Engineering Co-op Student Information

About The Program

Mechatronics Engineering at the University of Guelph integrates mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering with artificial intelligence. This multidisciplinary program equips students with the skills to design hardware and software for automation, autonomous systems, and smart, computer-controlled devices. A distinct feature of our curriculum is the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). The program emphasizes problem-solving, project management, and communication, preparing students to become specialists in automation, intelligent systems, advanced manufacturing and robotics. Collaboration, teamwork, and innovative design are key components of the learning experience.

Graduates will be adept at designing and building advanced mechatronic systems, integrating mechanical components with electronics and software, and developing smart technologies to enhance machine efficiency and responsiveness. They will be well-prepared for rewarding careers in various industries, including manufacturing, healthcare, transportation, and energy.

*Students can choose to specialize in Robotics-Control-AI or Manufacturing-Automation, tailoring their education to their career interests.

Sample Jobs

Automation Co-op Student

You will gain hands-on experience in designing, programming, and maintaining automated systems. Your responsibilities may include developing and testing control algorithms, integrating sensors and actuators, and troubleshooting system issues. You will collaborate with engineers to optimize manufacturing processes, ensuring efficiency and reliability.

Engineering Assistant 

You will help senior engineer(s) achieve their objectives through a variety of tasks and projects such as report writing, proposal preparation, studies and analysis, project management, etc. You may have the opportunity to work with other staff, clients, and vendors and participate in departmental meetings. Your role may involve a combination of shop floor and in-office work, depending upon the environment.

Controls Systems Co-op Student

You will assist in designing, implementing, and optimizing control systems for various applications. Your role may include programming PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers) and integrating hardware and software components. You will assist in testing and troubleshooting control systems to ensure they meet performance and safety standards.

Salary Information

Students receive compensation from their employer for co-op work terms. The rate of pay will vary depending on a number of factors including the industry, the student’s program of study, and work term level.
